Arriving to Athens
And finally, the last stop of our 3 week honeymoon extravaganza! We arrived to Athens from Santorini on a Ryan Air flight that took about 55 minutes. We made our way to the Airbnb using FREENOW, which is similar to Uber or Lyft. I downloaded the app and used FREENOW to take us to our Airbnb in Spata that was about 7km from the airport. We didn’t stay in the city center of Athens because we wanted to be closer to the airport. There are pros and cons to this as it was not easy getting to the city center from where we were staying.
The FREENOW ride was €47 from the airport to our Airbnb. We dropped our bags and decided we were going to the city center to go to the Acropolis and get some dinner. We reserved our tickets for the Acropolis the day of and had no issues. We went toward the end of the day to avoid the peak time of crowds and as the sun was going down. Two tickets were €49 and we did a self-guided tour. With the help of the instructions from our Airbnb host, we took the bus from Spata to the train station, and from the train station, to the city center of Athens. This was very cheap, no more than €10, but it took over an hour and was pretty stressful.
We walked through the Acropolis and the Parthenon for just over an hour. We then found a bar called A for Athens with an epic view of the Acropolis at sunset. We each grabbed a drink here for €30 before heading to Hard Rock Cafe for dinner. It felt silly going to such an American restaurant, but we were really craving burgers and fries. We ate here for €47, then made our way back to the train station to head back to the Airbnb.
Full Day in Athens
We had one full day in Athens before heading back to the States. Truthfully, at this point in the trip, we were exhausted and ready to go home and take a long nap. We couldn’t pass up our day in Athens, so we had a very slow morning grabbing pastries and coffee from a local bakery down the street from our Airbnb – it was so authentic that the language barrier was difficult, but friendly nonetheless. After watching some TV, we found an e-bike tour on Airbnb Experiences and decided that would be a fun activity for the late afternoon/early evening.
The e-bike tour was €96 for the two of us, and we had to meet in the city center of Athens. We opted to avoid the bus to the train station, so we got a FREENOW ride to the train station that then took us to the city center. This ride was €17.60 for 5km. We met at the Athens by Bike shop to start our tour. Our group had about 15 people in it and it was led by an amazing guide! I 100% recommend this activity (link below). We made many stops to see the highlights of Athens including the Olympic Stadium, changing of the presidential guards, and a hilltop view of the Acropolis.
After the 3-hour tour, we were hungry for our last Greek dinner. We went to O Thanasis for authentic Greek salad and gyros for €44. This is a very touristy area in Athens, but the food was great and quick service. We took one more FREENOW ride to the Airbnb and got ready for bed. Our flight out of Athens was at 6am, meaning we had to get to the airport by 4am at the latest. I was able to reserve a ride on FREENOW ahead of time, so it was waiting for us in the morning at 3:30am.
Things to Note:
- Decide if you want to be in the city center to have easy access to Athens or if you want to be closer to the airport. From the airport to the city center is about 30-45 minutes.
- If you are not a huge history buff, I recommend a self-guided tour of the Acropolis and the Parthenon.
- FREENOW is very convenient but can get pricey – use a combination of FREENOW and the train to offset some transportation cost
- Just like the ferry strikes, there are strikes that affect all public transportation in Athens which would result in having to use FREENOW or taxis. Stay up to date daily on the strikes and how it could affect public transportation.
