When it comes to Labor Day weekend plans, people immediately think of the beach. It’s the last summer hoorah before school starts and fall weather sneaks in on us. If you live anywhere near a beach town, you know this means one thing, and one thing only – traffic. And if you are familiar with Dover, Delaware, you know that there is really only one main highway to get you to the beaches in and around Rehoboth Beach. I planned for my friend Kellie to come visit me on this extended weekend since she only lives 5 hours from here. Anytime I have a visitor, I immediately start thinking of where to go, what activities to do, and where to take them to eat. Dover itself does not have much, so an obligatory beach trip was in our sights.

Where to Eat

Dover does not have a lot of local restaurants, so we end up driving 30-45 minutes to other towns that have good local food. Chris and I love this Italian restaurant in Rehoboth called Touch of Italy. We take all of our visitors here, so we had to take Kellie here as well. We made reservations for Friday evening and arrived around 6:15pm. The wine menu is extensive – Kellie enjoyed the vanilla espresso martini and I got a refreshing rose. Our most favorite item on the menu is the garlic cheese bread – 1000% recommend, it’s *chef’s kiss*. The portions are decent sized, always leaving me leftovers. Between the 3 of us, we got gnocchi, penne vodka, and chicken parmesan.

On the way to the beach, we stopped in Milford at Surf Bagel. If you are craving a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel, this is the place to go. They also have breakfast burritos and lunch items like philly cheesesteaks, sandwiches, and so on. Chris and I love Surf Bagel, but it is just far enough away that we don’t go that often, but since we were driving right by it in the morning, it was the perfect excuse to stop here.

After the beach, we started scheming up what to order for dinner back in Dover. There is a new restaurant that just opened up very close to where we live called Curry Pizza House. They specialize in Indian-inspired pizzas, but also have traditional pizzas. Kellie, Chris, and I all equally love and bond over Indian food, so we had to get it! We got a half curry chicken masala and half butter chicken pizza – 10/10.

Sunday was a very lowkey day that was spent mainly at my house on the couch. I had planned for a charcuterie and wine girls day, so I went to the Amish market in Dover, Spence’s Bazaar, on Friday to pick up a variety of cheese and meats. For $50, I got 4 different cheeses, a cream cheese spread, 2 types of crackers, and 2 deli meats. We also picked up Tattoo Girl Riesling.

Which Beach?

There are several beaches around Southern Delaware, but my favorite is Cape Henlopen State Park Beach. Aside from the beach, Cape Henlopen has several trails for running, walking, and biking, among other sites to explore. It is $5 for in-state license plates, or $10 for out-of-state license plates. If you plan on spending the whole day here, the entry fee to the park is an incredible deal compared to paying for hourly public parking near Rehoboth Beach. We parked at the main parking lot of the beach and hauled all of our things to the beach.

There is a concession stand with snacks before getting on the boardwalk to the beach; there are also bathrooms and showers here. We arrived to the beach around 11:30am after a long line of getting into the park, but this was not surprising given it was the Saturday of LDW. We walked about 5 minutes to find an open spot on the beach and set up camp with our beach chairs and cooler full of snacks. We brought an umbrella, but it wasn’t a hot day so we didn’t end up using it.

We spent about 6 hours at the beach. We dug around in the sand for a TikTok trend I found (go figure), sunbathed, saw dolphins, and yapped for hours. There is also nothing more satisfying than a cold sandwich on the beach with some crackers and watermelon. Chris and his friend went fishing on the pier a few miles away in the park. By 3pm, the beach had cleared out a good bit – I’m assuming everyone was leaving to get ready for dinner in town. Around 5:15pm, Chris came back and we started to pack up the car to head out.

Lowkey Activities Indoors

After a day outdoors and some volleyball, we were looking forward to a day of couch rotting and catching up. We slept in until 10:30am and relocated to the couch to drink our coffee and yap. We decided around 2pm that it was time to get dressed and run some errands. We started at Starbucks getting some fall coffee drinks and wandered around Target. We came to get wine glasses to paint and decorate. We needed some more paint, so we stopped at Michael’s after, followed by Ulta for face masks and whatever else we wanted to get. After an hour of being in public, we went right back home and got cozy.

I made the charcuterie board and we watched Anyone But You for a feel-good rom-com. Once the movie was over, we started painting the wine glasses and rewatching New Girl. At 9pm, the Jonas Brothers concert was being livestreamed, so we had that playing from 9pm-12am. I saw the Jonas Brothers 2 weeks prior in concert, but as a BIG Jonas Brothers girly, I had to watch the livestream and subject Kellie to watching it with me. We ate leftover pasta and pizza from the days prior around 10pm. It was a magical rest day with a good friend!
